The idea

This robotic arm, a further development of the BionicMotionRobot, is ideally suited to human-robot collaboration due to its flexibility.

The objective

The BionicSoftArm is a modular, pneumatic lightweight robot with natural movement sequences and can be used in a wide range of applications in soft robotics.

Technical data

  • Diameter: 80 mm
  • Length of bellows segments: 150 mm
  • Length of rotary drives: 150 mm
  • Overall length: max. 1050 mm
  • Degrees of freedom: max. 7
  • Weight of bellows segments: 500 g
  • Weight of rotary actuators: 750 g
  • Operating pressure: max. 6 bar
  • Repetition accuracy: 5 mm
  • User interface: Festo Robotics Suite
  • Path planning: robot operating system
  • Control: Festo Motion Terminal VTEM

Flexibility

Depending on the design and the gripper installed, this robotic arm can be used for a wide range of applications. Thanks to its adaptability, it can be easily deployed in various different locations.

Operation

The robot can be intuitively operated via a specially developed graphical interface from Festo: Users can easily “teach” and parameterise the actions on a tablet.

Motion dynamics

The bellows, made from robust elastomer, are covered in a special 3D textile mesh. The high-tensile threads are oriented in such a way as to allow the bellows structures to expand in the desired direction of movement and to restrict expansion in other directions.
