The idea

The 3D-printed walking robot is supplied with air from just one compressed-air connection.

The objective

The core element of the walking robot is a pneumatic logic module of polyurethane produced in a 3D printing process.

Technical data

  • Hose connection: 1
  • Control centre: pneumatic logic module
  • Material: thermoplastic polyurethane

Function

The pneumatic logic module performs all the tasks normally carried out by valves and control units in pneumatic systems. The four legs of the walking robot, each consisting of three air chambers, can thus be precisely controlled with just one compressed-air hose connection.

Sustainability

The polyurethane used in the BionicTurtleWalker can be melted down and reused in keeping with the principle of a circular economy.

Potential

With pneumatic logic modules from the 3D printer, tasks involving movement can be carried out within a very small space. The technology can be used for flexible gripping tasks in soft robotics or for applications in which humans and robots work directly together.
