The idea

This innovative construction principle using load-bearing structures of air opened up new perspectives.

The objective

Tensairity® was based on experience gained from projects with lightweight pneumatic structures.

Technical data

  • Bridge span: 8 m
  • Bridge weight: 196 kg
  • Bridge load capacity: approx. 3500 kg

Construction principle

This principle combines classic engineering knowledge with lightweight materials and new insights. Possible applications range from roofing for halls and stadiums to bridges and airships. The term Tensairity®, which was registered as a trademark, combines the words “tension”, “air” and “integrity”.

Structure

The air beam based on Tensairity® is a flexible horizontal beam consisting of a cylindrical or spindle-shaped pressurised air corpus made of coated polyester fabric. A groove on the rear contains an integrated compression bar, which is fixed in place by a pneumatic structure and absorbs the compression forces. The tensile forces are absorbed by ropes wound around the inflated round corpus.
